The solid knock Laura Wolvaardt, along with fifties from Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp, has helped South Africa strongly finish against Pakistan in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 clash played on October 21 at Colombo.

Pakistan bowlers, who were impressive throughout the tournament, got hit heavily by Proteas batters went on to post a mammoth total in a rain-affected game.

After being invited to bat first, South Africa had a major blow, losing the wicket of Tazmin Brits cheaply, before rain interrupted the game at Colombo.

After resuming the game, South Africa were unstoppable, as Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus posted a 118-run partnership for the second wicket. Nashra Sandhu brought the second breakthrough, dismissing Sune Luus, who scored 61 runs off 59 deliveries.

Despite Annerie Dercksen and Karabo Maso being dismissed cheaply, Marizanne Kapp went on to take a solid stance at the crease, making small partnerships with Chloe Tryon and Nadine de Klerk, helping the side to breach the 300-run mark in the 40-over games.

Marizanne Kapp went on to post an unbeaten 68 runs as South Africa scored 312 runs in the 40-over innings.

Although Sadia Iqbal and Nashra Sandhu picked three wickets each, South Africa did put up a big target for Pakistan to chase in their 40-over innings. Pakistan will need to post 306 runs in their innings with a revised score (DLS Method).

Speaking on the toss, Fatima Sana said, “We’re going to bowl first. Looks like a good pitch for the bowlers. We have four spinners. Everything depends on being calm. Same team.”

Meanwhile, Laura Wolvaardt said, “Not the worst thing (batting first). Throughout the competition, we’ve done well chasing. The one time we batted first, it didn’t go well. With the semifinals looming, good to bat first. Just the one change – Ayabonga is in for Klaas.”
