Hyderabad: A decades-old causeway on River Musi at Moosarambagh Bridge, which was heavily damaged when surplus floodwater was released during the recent heavy rains, was demolished on Thursday.
After the heavy rains last month, traffic has been restricted on this bridge and diverted to alternative routes, forcing commuters to take a detour of at least 4 km to 5 km. For decades, scores of commuters used this causeway that connected Amberpet, Dilsukhnagar, Malakpet and adjoining areas for their commute.
Work on the newly proposed high-level bridge here has been progressing at a snail’s pace. Motorists, who are already facing severe difficulties, express their anguish over the delay in the construction work of the high-level bridge and dismantling of the old facility.
GHMC is spending Rs 52 crore on the proposed bridge, which will have six lanes and a 3.5 metre sidewalk on each side, but the work progress has been hit by delays.
Senior GHMC engineering officials said, “After conducting a detailed study on the structural stability of the causeway, we decided to demolish it from the safety point of commuters and to prevent high risk to human lives.”
