Shubman Gill’s Team India will be aiming to avoid a first-ever ODI series whitewash against world champions Australia, when the two teams face off at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday. Mitch Marsh-led Australian side took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series with their two-wicket win in the second ODI match at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.
It will be a special occasion for cricket fans in Australia who will get one final opportunity to witness Indian legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in action down under. Kohli has endured a nightmare so far in the ODI series, failing to get off the mark in the first two ODI games at Perth and Adelaide. It was the former India captain’s first two ducks in Australia.
Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, battled and grinded hard in the second game on a tough track to top-score for India with 73 off 97 balls – his 59th ODI fifty. The former India captain was all at sea against Josh Hazlewood but opened up against all-rounder Mitchell Owen, smashing his 345th and 346th ODI six.
Indians were in the hunt in the game while defending the target but some lacklustre fielding and fast bowlers who were cramping up in Adelaide let them down. Matthew Short and youngster Cooper Connolly notched up impressive fifties to script a series win for the inexperienced Aussies.
With the series in the bag, Aussies may decide to rest Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood and bring in Jack Edwards and Nathan Ellis in their place. India, on the other hand, maybe forced to bring in Prasidh Krishna in place of Harshit Rana – who was struggling severely with cramps – and finally give an opportunity to chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav.
