Anu Emmanuel Finds Deep Fulfilment Playing Durga in ‘The Girlfriend’

Young and talented actress Anu Emmanuel says playing Durga in The Girlfriend gave her immense creative satisfaction. The recently released film, starring Rashmika Mandanna and Dheekshith Shetty, has received a strong response from both youth and family audiences. Directed by Rahul Ravindran, the movie was produced by Dheeraj Mogilineni and Vidya Koppinedi under Geetha Arts and Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainment, and presented by Allu Aravind.
Speaking about her experience, Anu said she immediately accepted the offer after hearing the script. “The story carries a meaningful message about women, and I knew I wanted to be part of it. The project gave me great creative satisfaction,” she shared.
Anu revealed that she has acted alongside many top stars like Pawan Kalyan, Allu Arjun, Nani, Naga Chaitanya, Sivakarthikeyan, Karthi, and Vishal, but admitted that not all roles gave her artistic fulfilment. “In some commercial movies, I just danced or delivered routine lines. I’ve decided not to take up such roles anymore. The Girlfriend helped me grow as an actress,” she said.
Discussing her character, Anu said she was initially nervous about audience response but was pleased with how director Rahul shaped the role. “He’s a very sensitive director who guides every actor with care. He told me to keep my performance natural, and that made Durga’s character real. I even dubbed for my role with an American accent to make it more authentic,” she added.
Anu also praised the film’s approach to storytelling, saying that every character has importance. “In The Girlfriend, there’s no typical hero or heroine. Each role adds meaning to the story. Durga’s strength comes from facing pain and misunderstanding — something both women and men can relate to,” she explained.
While Anu says she’s still seeking full satisfaction in her career, she feels content as an artist. “I’ve never chased opportunities. The right roles will come to me,” she said. She also shared her journey from the U.S. to Hyderabad, mentioning she has lived there since arriving in India.
The actress praised her co-star Dheekshith Shetty, calling him a committed performer, and expressed gratitude to producer Dheeraj Mogilineni for backing a meaningful film. “Many female-oriented movies fail because they don’t get the right support. The Girlfriend shows how women face endless expectations from society, while men are only judged by their jobs,” she noted.
Anu confirmed that she currently has a few projects under discussion and hopes to work in Malayalam cinema soon.
