Shubman Gill’s day at the Eden had started like any other. A quick boundary off Simon Harmer to get his innings going, nothing out of place. Within minutes, though, India’s captain was struggling to move his neck and had to walk off in clear discomfort. By stumps, the situation had turned serious enough for the team to shift him to a city hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU for observation.
Shubman Gill retired himself out
At 79 for 2, India were looking steady. Once Gill retired hurt, the innings lacked stability and ended at 189 for 9. He did not come back to bat, and he could not take the field either. While the fans wait and thought Gill might come, but he didn’t. Rishabh Pant took over the captaincy as Gill was taken for scans and treatment. As per Telegraph India, the 26-year-old was in significant pain due to an acute neck spasm, and keeping him in the ICU was a precaution.
“Shubman had to be admitted to the hospital and has undergone scans as well. He is in pain and discomfort because of an acute neck spasm, and treating that first is the top priority. He’s in the ICU as a precautionary measure,” a team source said later on Saturday.
“Medicines have been administered after Gill was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on Saturday as he was experiencing severe neck pain. A six-member medical board has been formed under Dr Saptarshi Basu which includes a cardiologist and a neurologist. But this is purely as a precaution,” revealed Revsportz’s report after Day 2.
Gill may/should miss IND vs SA 2nd Test
What’s more, RevSportz reported that Gill was monitored through the night and that recovery will take a few days at least. That alone makes his availability for the Guwahati Test highly unlikely. Even if he’s available, Gill should avoid playing the second Test of the series that starts on November 22. He has been a constant fixture in the Indian team ever since the ODI Champions Trophy and Gill needs to take a chill pill now (no pun intended).
Gill needs to take his care
Shubman Gill has taken almost no rest this year and has been a regular fixture in the squad. With now being India’s Test and ODI captain, he is added with more responsibility. Also, since the Asia Cup 2025, Gill has been an out-and-out three format player as he is also Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy. Since February, Gill has been playing nonstop cricket – ODI Champions Trophy, IPL, England tour, Asia Cup, West Indies Test series, Australia tour, and now the South Africa Test series.
India now face the prospect of going into the final Test of the series without their captain and No. 4. With South Africa still holding a 63-run lead in the ongoing game, Gill’s absence has already meant a disadvantage to India, and the next six days will decide how much more it affects the series.
