Australia have been left shocked and stranded with a spate of injuries even before the T20 World Cup 2026 could get underway with both captain Pat Cummins and the stand-in skipper Mitchell Marsh both sidelined before their opener. Both Australia and Zimbabwe have started off their campaigns with massive wins over Ireland and Oman respectively. For Zimbabwe, young Brian Bennett was destructive on his T20 World Cup debut, smashing 48 off 36 balls while Blessing Muzarabani set the tone with three early wickets while bowling.
Australia, on the other hand, lost their captain Marsh after a painful blow to the groin area in a training session and were led by Head. Nathan Ellis stepped up to the plate with a four-wicket haul against the Irish.
“I don’t look at myself as the leader of the attack. It means a lot for me to be here in the Australian jersey at a World Cup. That’s probably the biggest thing. So we’ve had a really good lead in. We’re all looking forward to tonight. So yeah, good to get the first one out of the way and a win on the board,” Ellis said after the win over Ireland.
Zimbabwe will draw on the memories of a famous upset win over Australia in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup back in 2007. While Marsh is unlikely to take the field on Friday, Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Tim David is coming closer to a comeback and could replace Matt Renshaw or Cooper Connolly in the side.
