‘Transformative President’: Canada PM Hails Trump for India-Pakistan Ceasefire Amid Nobel Peace Prize Talks

US President Donald Trump received high praise from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during a meeting in the Oval Office on Tuesday, as talks of a potential Nobel Peace Prize for the President continue. Carney described Trump as “transformative” and highlighted what he said were gains in the US economy, NATO defence commitments, and regional stability. “Thank you very much, Mr President. If I may, you kindly hosted me and some of my colleagues a few months ago, and I said at the time, you are a transformative president. And since then, the transformation in the economy, unprecedented commitments of NATO partners to defence spending,” Carney told Trump. In his remarks, Carney also credited Trump with contributing to peace in several regions, including between India and Pakistan, as well as in Azerbaijan, Armenia, and in countering Iran’s influence. “Peace from India, Pakistan, through to Azerbaijan, Armenia, disabling Iran as a force of terror,” he said. Trump has repeatedly suggested that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his record in de-escalating international conflicts. “Everyone says I should get the Nobel Peace Prize,” he said, referencing his efforts in the Middle East. Speaking to senior US military officials on Tuesday, he added: “They’ll give it to some guy that didn’t do a damn thing. That would be a big insult to our country.”The Canadian Prime Minister’s comments follow Trump’s repeated claims that his use of tariffs helped prevent a war between India and Pakistan. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump had said: “If I didn’t have the power of tariffs, you would have at least four of the seven wars raging. I use tariffs to stop wars. If you look at India and Pakistan, they were ready to go at it… nuclear powers. I don’t want to say exactly what I said, but what I said was very effective. They stopped. And that was based on tariffs.” Trump described tariffs as both an economic and strategic tool, adding: “Tariffs are very important for the United States. We are a peacekeeper because of tariffs. Not only do we make hundreds of billions of dollars, but we’re a peacekeeper because of tariffs.” However, Indian officials have consistently rejected suggestions that foreign leaders played a role in the ceasefire following Operation Sindoor. New Delhi maintains that the cessation of hostilities was agreed directly between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also told Parliament: “No leader of any country asked India to stop Operation Sindoor,” referring to India’s military response to a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on 22 April, which killed 26 people. Since the ceasefire, Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for de-escalating tensions, attributing the outcome to his use of trade and tariffs as leverage. At a private dinner with Republican lawmakers last month, he had said: “We stopped a lot of wars. And these were serious — India and Pakistan, that was going on. Planes were being shot out of the air… five jets were shot down, actually.”
