After T20I retirement, Kane Williamson opts out of New Zealand’s ODI squad

Kane Williamson will not feature in New Zealand’s upcoming ODI series against the West Indies, as the star batter continues to manage his workload and prepare for the longer format. The 34-year-old, who recently announced his retirement from T20 internationals, has chosen to skip the three-match ODI series starting November 16 in Christchurch.

Williamson to focus on Tests as Henry returns

Williamson’s decision comes as New Zealand announced a 14-member squad for the ODIs, led by all-rounder Mitchell Santner. The selectors have recalled pacer Matt Henry, who missed the ICC Champions Trophy and recent limited-overs assignments due to injury. The series will also serve as key preparation for the West Indies’ visit for the World Test Championship fixtures starting December 2.

Despite being New Zealand’s all-time leading ODI run-scorer with 7256 runs at an average of 48.70, the right-hander has made it clear that his focus remains on contributing in formats where he can give his best physically and mentally. He has now decided to sit out of this series due to the fact that he remains in superb condition come the Tests. New Zealand will play the ODIs against West Indies in Christchurch, Napier, and Hamilton between November 16 and 22 before shifting focus to red-ball cricket.

The squad selection also saw major headaches for selectors as majority of the players remain injured. Mohammad Abbas, Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, and Ben Sears all remain unavailable. Blair Tickner, who impressed against England, has been rewarded with another call-up. Off the field, Williamson has already taken on a new cricketing role. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have brought him on board as a strategic advisor ahead of IPL 2026, a move initiated by franchise owner Dr. Sanjiv Goenka.
