Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin lamented the indirect communication that currently existed between players and the selectors in the country’s setup at the moment. His remarks come amid uncertainty over the future of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami. Ashwin claimed that players were afraid to communicate directly with the selectors as they feared the matter would be leaked.
Ashwin wants selectors to change their approach
In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin explained that a player wasn’t able to tell selectors what exactly was on his mind as the matter would either get leaked or would be skewed in a different way. The duo returned to international cricket for the first time since the Champions Trophy final in the IND vs AUS 1st ODI. Ashwin’s remarks were made in reference to the future of the duo in ODIs and if they would be in the scheme of things of the selectors for the 2027 World Cup.
“Indian cricket is currently functioning on indirect speech, that is something I wish really changes. But that change needs to come from both players and the administration or selectors. The problem is if you talk directly, the matter gets leaked outside. So, obviously there is no confidence in the player to approach someone and say this is what is going on in my mind,” Ashwin said.
Apart from Rohit and Kohli, there is also uncertainty over Shami’s future, with both the pacer and chief selector Ajit Agarkar going back and forth at each other after the former was snubbed from the IND vs AUS series.
“Shami performed well and spoke in a press conference. Why did he do that? Because he hasn’t got clarity. The one thing that I like is the chairman of selectors or captain fronting the press after every selection. This is about handling people with respect and dignity. It is the direct communication that everyone is worried about,” Ashwin added.
