Hyderabad: Five consecutive days of persistent rainfall have significantly impacted businesses across Hyderabad, leaving markets deserted and traders facing substantial losses.
Deserted Markets and Reduced Footfall
Contrary to popular belief, the continuous downpour has kept residents indoors, leading to a drastic drop in foot traffic. Areas like Begum Bazar, Afzalgunj, Abids Road, Siddiamber Bazar, Badi Chowdi, and Nampally are reporting unusually low activity.
“People aren’t venturing out unless it’s absolutely necessary, mainly due to concerns about traffic jams,” said Manoj Agarwal, a trader in Begum Bazaar. He noted that only shops selling essential items like groceries and medicines are seeing any business.
Manish Jain, another businessman, echoed these sentiments, explaining that while rain is generally welcome, the fear of waterlogging and electrocution is deterring customers. “We rely on businessmen who come from districts, but only small local traders are visiting the market now,” he added.
Early Closures and Slump in Evening Business
In the Old City, many traders are now closing their shops as early as 9 p.m., a notable shift from their usual 10:30 p.m. closing time. Syed Jameel, a trader in Laad Bazaar, explained, “Our workers are eager to get home due to the fear of heavy rains. Plus, there’s virtually no business after 6 p.m., so keeping the shop open just means unnecessary expenses like power bills and overtime.”
Even hotels, which might typically see a boost during such weather, are experiencing a decline in evening patronage. A hotelier near Charminar stated, “After 10 p.m., no one is visiting. People are prioritizing getting home. We’re only staying open to maintain consistency.”
