Hyderabad: A couple was arrested by the Madannapet police for allegedly killing their seven-year-old niece by throwing her into an overhead water tank on Tuesday.
The suspects were identified as Mir Sami Ali (36) and his wife Yasmeen Begum (28), residents of Chawni, Yakutpura.
According to the police, the victim, Ummehani Sumaiya (7) along with her father had gone to her maternal grandmother’s house located at Chowni, Yakutpura in view of Dasara holidays. The suspects, Sami and Yasmeen, stayed at the same building and Sami managed a water purifier plant on the ground floor of the building.
“There were grudges between Sami, and the girl’s father over property-related issues. Also, a few months ago, the three-and-a-half-year-old daughter of Sami and Yasmeen passed away and the couple suspected that Sumaiya’s parents had performed black magic leading to the death of their daughter,” said K Srikanth, Additional DCP (South East).
On Tuesday, when the victim arrived at her grandmother’s house, Sami and Yasmeen took her to the terrace. “The couple then tied her hands with a rope, gagged her mouth with a packing tape and threw the girl into the overhead water tank. The girl drowned and died,” said the official.
Initially, Sumaiya’s parents suspected she had gone missing and made a complaint with the police. A missing case was registered and special teams formed to trace the girl.
The next evening, the police checked the water tank on the building and found the body of the girl inside. The sections of the case were altered and Sami and Yasmeen were taken into custody. On interrogation, they allegedly admitted to have killed the girl. Both of them were arrested.
