The mini-auction before the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) edition will reportedly mostly take place between December 13 and 15 later this year. Last year, teams revamped their squads after taking part in a mega-auction. While the dates for the IPL 2026 mini-auction haven’t been confirmed by the IPL Governing Council yet, it is most likely to take place in the aforementioned window.
IPL 2026 auction to take place in December
As per Cricbuzz, sources in the franchises have revealed that they are engaged in discussions with the BCCI to finalise the date of the mini-auction. The report claims that there is no clarity on where the IPL 2026 auction will be held at the moment and that they won’t be surprised if an Indian city hosts the process, just like it was for the mega auction before IPL 2025. Further, the report claims that the deadline for teams to decide on their retentions will be November 15.
The report further claims that no team apart from the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals are expected to make big releases. Both CSK and RR finished at the bottom of the points table in IPL 2025 after performing miserably in the season.
In the previous mega auction, a maximum of six retentions (five capped and two uncapped players) were allowed per team. The franchises also enjoyed the liberty of using the Right to Match card if they did not retain the maximum number of players permitted.
While there will be no cap on retentions this time around, it remains to be seen how many teams will want to have a large-scale revamp via releases. Rs 120 crore was the auction purse set for the ten teams in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
The BCCI also introduced a new rule – any player who registers in the player auction and, after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for 2 seasons.
