Karwa Chauth, celebrated on the fourth day after the full moon in the Kartik month every year, is one of the most significant Hindu festivals. On this day, all married women pray and keep a fast for a long and healthy life for their husbands. According to the English calendar, Karwa Chauth is on 10th October 2025. The term Karwa Chauth is made up of two words, ‘Karwa’ and ‘Chauth’, meaning ‘earthen pot’ and ‘the fourth’ respectively. It is a day-long fast where women don’t consume any food or water after sunrise. This fast is only complete after the moon is up, and wives have the first sip of water at the hands of their husbands. An important part of the Karwa Chauth festivities is “Sargi”. Sargi is a festive thali curated by the elder ladies of the family, preferably the mother-in-law of the woman keeping the fast. This thali is served before sunrise with food items to keep the stomach full during the fast. Enjoying this thali marks the start of Karwa Chauth and is significant because it provides nourishment for the day-long fast. Here are some easy and nourishing recipes for Sargi.Pheni with Milk (Sweet Vermicelli) A traditional sweet dish made by soaking vermicelli in warm milk is the perfect start to Karwa Chauth. Simply soak thin vermicelli (Pheni) in warm, lightly sweetened milk. Add cardamom if desired and let it sit until the vermicelli is soft. This is easy to make and light on the stomach throughout your day.Poha (Flattened Rice) Light and made with minimal effort, Poha is another perfect Sargi item that’ll keep you full without feeling too heavy. In a pan, add a little oil, mustard seeds, and curry leaves. Add Peanuts and finely chopped potato. Finally, add the poha with spices as desired. Dry Fruit Mix The easiest and healthiest Sargi food items are definitely dry fruits. Take dry fruits of your choice, like Almonds, Cashews, Raisins, dates, etc, and serve them raw with the rest of the food items. It is healthy and keeps you full for a long time. You can also soak them overnight if you want. Paneer Sandwich Soft and savoury Paneer sandwich is a perfect Sargi option. It is also light to digest and is rich in protein, keeping you energized throughout your day. Crumble some fresh paneer and mix it with mild spices, including salt, pepper, and turmeric. Stuff it between slices of a whole wheat or multigrain bread. Toast it till lightly golden and serve it on your Sargi Thali.Almond Milk A glass of warm almond milk is a must-have before your fast and will be very soothing to end your Sargi with. Add turmeric or Soaked Chia seeds for extra nourishment. Avoid taking overly spicy or fried food, as it may cause discomfort during your fast. Eat light and easy-to-digest food to have a comfortable and energetic day without any troubles.
