An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale struck the Kyrgyzstan region in the early hours of Monday, officials said. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) initially measured the quake at 5.7, but it was later revised to 5.5.The earthquake occurred at around 1.28 am local time at a shallow depth of seven kilometres. Its epicentre was located 77 kilometres south-southeast of Taraz, Kazakhstan.Despite the intensity of the tremor, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage to buildings. Residents in the region reportedly felt the shaking, but the situation appears to be under control so far.Why Kyrgyzstan Experiences Frequent EarthquakesThe Tien Shan mountain range, spanning Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and western China, sits in one of Central Asia’s most active seismic zones. Moderate earthquakes, typically ranging from magnitudes 4 to 6, are common in the region. These quakes occur because the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates constantly collide, creating frequent seismic activity.
