Despite scoring his 50th international hundred for India, it isn’t certain that Rohit Sharma will continue to be part of the plans in 2027. Rohit’s next and only goal will be playing the ODI World Cup in South Africa. Despite reaching the semifinal in 2015 and 2019 and then the final in 2023, the Indian opener hasn’t managed to lift the most prestigious trophy in all of cricket.
Rohit Sharma’s future uncertain
Rohit has outrightly stated that it’s what he aims for, having retired from Test and T20I cricket. While the former India captain dreams of it, nothing’s certain at the moment. Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar had stated that Rohit was ‘non-committal’ regarding the ODI World Cup.
The statement had left many puzzled. But Agarkar reiterated the same a few days later, saying directly that the selectors can’t plan for something that is still over two years away.
Will he achieve his dream?
However, Rohit’s former India and Mumbai Indians teammate Parthiv Patel is certain that the opener won’t just play the ODI World Cup but win it. He cited Sachin Tendulkar and Lionel Messi as example of superstar athletes winning the trophy they desired for years in their last go. Parthiv thinks Rohit is destined to do the same in 2027, fitness permitting.
“We were talking about destiny. The example is Sachin Tendulkar winning the World Cup in 2011 when he was playing his last World Cup. If we talk about football, Lionel Messi won the World Cup in the end. Rohit Sharma has won all the trophies. He hasn’t won just one thing, and that’s the 50-over World Cup. His sights will be on that now; that’s how he can keep himself fit till 2027 and then see how India can win that World Cup,” Parthiv said on Star Sports.
