The re-release of the Telugu romantic drama Love Story, starring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, has failed to recreate the magic of its original theatrical run and has ended up as a box office disappointment. The film, which was a major success when it first released after the Covid period, had collected around ₹62 crore gross worldwide and crossed ₹35 crore in share, emerging as one of the notable romantic hits of its time. Riding on that success and the growing trend of re-releases performing well in theatres, the makers brought Love Story back to the big screen during the Valentine’s Day weekend.
However, the response this time has been underwhelming across key centres. Trade reports indicate that the film struggled to attract footfalls even during the holiday weekend, despite expectations that couples and youth audiences would turn up for the re-release. Ticket sales on leading booking platforms remained low, and occupancy in major cities failed to pick up momentum. In several areas, collections reportedly did not even cover basic theatre rental costs. Industry estimates suggest that the re-release has managed to collect only around ₹20 lakh gross in total, which is considered very low compared to the film’s original box office performance.
Trade analysts point out that increased competition from new releases and multiple re-released films in the same period affected Love Story’s visibility in theatres. The changing viewing habits of audiences, with a strong preference for OTT platforms for repeat watches, also played a role in the weak theatrical turnout. While Love Story continues to be remembered as a successful romantic film in Telugu cinema, its re-release performance highlights the risks involved in bringing older hits back to theatres without strong demand or a unique pull factor.
