Mumbai Kurla Station to Get New Elevated Terminal by 2026 | CR Update

Mumbai Kurla Station to Get New Elevated Terminal and two new lines by 2026. Learn how this project will transform local and express train travel.

For millions of Mumbaikars who rely on the Mumbai Local — the city’s lifeline — there’s some great news ahead. Soon, the Kurla railway station will feature a new, advanced elevated station, designed to ease crowding and modernize one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban junctions.

🔹 Project Overview

Located on the Central Railway’s Harbour Line, Kurla Station is one of Mumbai’s key suburban hubs, handling nearly 4 to 5 lakh passengers daily. Narrow platforms, old foot overbridges, and rising congestion have made it a long-overdue candidate for redevelopment.

Now, the railways have launched a comprehensive modernization project that includes the construction of fifth and sixth railway lines — a move that will streamline train traffic by separating suburban, express, and freight operations.

🏗 What’s New in the Project?

According to railway officials, the redevelopment includes:

  • A 410-meter-long ramp to ensure smoother train movement.
  • A 1,340-meter-long new elevated railway track connecting Kurla to Chunnabhatti.
  • A brand-new elevated Harbour Line station between Kurla and Chunnabhatti.
  • The new station will feature three platforms:
    1. One for trains heading towards Panvel,
    2. One for trains bound for CSMT,
    3. One dedicated for trains terminating at Kurla.

This new setup will help passengers move between services seamlessly, reducing congestion and delays.

📅 Timeline and Deadlines

  • The project’s initial completion target is December 2025.
  • However, due to land acquisition delays, it may only be fully operational by late 2026.
  • Phase 1 (Kurla to Parel, 10.1 km) is already under construction, with over 30% of the work completed.
  • Phase 2 (Parel to CSMT, 7.4 km) is still in the paperwork stage.

🧱 Reasons for the Delay

The main bottleneck for the project has been land acquisition and rehabilitation.

  • Over 200 families in areas like Vidyavihar and Sion are affected and being relocated.
  • Around 140 families have already been resettled; work for the rest is ongoing.
  • Legal and administrative issues regarding government and private land have also caused nearly 15–17 years of delay.

💰 Cost and Investment

  • Initially estimated at ₹800 crore, the cost has now risen to around ₹1,350 crore due to delays.
  • The project is being executed in two phases:
    1. Two new dedicated tracks between Kurla and Parel.
    2. Extension from Parel to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

Additionally, under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-2), a total of 12 projects worth ₹1,240 crore are underway to enhance Mumbai’s suburban rail network.

🚆 How Will Mumbai’s Rail Network Improve?

Once completed:

  • The 5th and 6th lines will be dedicated to mail, express, and freight trains.
  • The 3rd and 4th lines will serve only suburban local trains.
  • This separation will reduce delays and increase the frequency of local train services.
  • Over 3.5 million daily passengers are expected to benefit from this transformation.

🌆 The Changing Face of Indian Railways

This redevelopment is not just about one station — it’s part of a broader transformation in Indian Railways.

Before 2014, only around 1,900 km of rail lines were doubled in five years.
In the past seven years alone, over 9,000 km of railway tracks have been doubled — a testament to the new pace of infrastructure development in India.

🔚 Conclusion

The Kurla Elevated Station and the Fifth–Sixth Line Project are set to be game-changers for Mumbai’s suburban rail network.
Once completed, it will significantly reduce congestion, improve punctuality, and offer passengers a smoother and more efficient travel experience.

If everything stays on track, by the end of 2026, Mumbai’s lifeline — the local train network — will become even stronger and smarter.
