Ravindra Jadeja was a big name absentee from India’s squad for the ODI series against Australia. While Jadeja retired from T20Is in 2024, he remains active in the 50-over format. The 36-year-old also featured in every game at the Champions Trophy, but was ignored for Axar Patel for the IND vs AUS ODI series. And while Ajit Agarkar clarified that Jadeja was very much in plans, Ravichandran Ashwin believes the clock has ticked over for the all-rounder.
It is clear he is not part of plans: Ravi Ashwin on Jadeja’s omission
India announced their squad for the Australia ODIs on Saturday. The 15-man squad featured Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav as spin options with Ravindra Jadeja dropped from the set up. Jadeja is currently playing in the IND vs WI Test series and is fit and available, but the selectors chose for different options.
Ravichandran Ashwin believes it is the end of the road for the 36-year-old. Speaking with Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel, Ashwin claimed it was clear that India were looking at the future. Ashwin enjoyed a potent partnership with Jadeja in Test cricket, earmarked Axar Patel and Washington Sundar for the 2027 World Cup.
“They have dropped Ravindra Jadeja. It is a clear direction that they are not looking at him for the next 50-over World Cup. There are about 10 ODIs to go before the tournament. If you do not pick him now, when does he play? I think it clear that Axar [Patel] will play the next World Cup,” Ashwin opined.
Jadeja has featured in 204 ODIs for India, scoring 2806 runs and picking 231 wickets. He will be 38 by the time the World Cup 2027 kicks off. Jadeja is the latest in line to be miss out with Ajit Agarkar building the team for the tournament. The selections of Washington Sundar and Axar Patel hint towards that thought, with age being a major factor.
Jadeja is enjoying a purple patch in red ball cricket. He scored a century a day before being snubbed from the IND vs AUS ODIs. The 36-year-old is not one to give up, and it’ll be interesting to see if he makes a comeback to the team.
