Novak Djokovic had another record-breaking night as he advanced to the second round of the 2025 ATP Shanghai Open on Friday (October 3) with a straight-sets victory over Martin Cilic by a scoreline of 7-6 (7-2) and 6-4 Qizhong Forest Sports Arena Stadium.
The Serbian set multiple world records in what was a special clash, as it marked the oldest-ever aggregate match between two players in an ATP Masters 100 event. The two players have a combined age of 75 years 139 days, beating a record that previously belonged to Feliciano Lopez and Ivo Karlovic during a 2017 Shanghai Open match.

With his victory, Djokovic etched his name in the history books by becoming the oldest player in history to win a match in an ATP 1000 Masters event against a Grand Slam champion, as per OPTA stats. While the Serbian has won 24 major titles, Cilic won the US Open in 2017.
Meanwhile, Cilic became the seventh player against whom Djokovic has more than 20 wins. The 38-year-old has played the 37-year-old 22 times in his career and has won 20 times while losing to him twice.
Djokovic is the first player in history to have won 20 or more games over in ATP events over seven opponents. Infact, no other player has achieved the feat over more than five opponents. Infact, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has a positive win-loss record over all seven players.

Meanwhile, this was the Serbian’s 40th win in the ATP Shanghai Masters in history, becoming the first player to do in history. He holds the record for the most wins in the competition’s history, having also won the title the most times with victories in 2012, 2023, 2015, and 2018.
This is the sixth ATP Masters 1000 Open title that Djokovic has won his career and has become the first player to do. He has previously achieved the feat in the Italian Open, Indian Wells, Paris Masters, Miami Open, and Cincinnati Open.
Rafael Nadal has 40+ wins in four events while Roger Federer won in three events.
