According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), traffic had slowed or stopped when a semi-truck failed to brake in time, causing a chain-reaction crash involving eight vehicles, four of them big rigs.The driver of the Freightliner, a 21-year-old man from Yuba City, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. At least four others were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to major. The identities and conditions of the victims have not been made public.Fuel spilled from one of the trucks, triggering a hazardous materials response. Firefighters responded quickly to contain the blaze, but several vehicles sustained heavy damage. Footage showed multiple semis, a trailer, a pickup truck, and two passenger cars involved in the crash.A SigAlert was issued, closing all westbound lanes except the FasTrak, as well as the I-10/I-15 connector road. Drivers were urged to find alternate routes due to significant delays. The freeway was fully reopened around 1 AM on Wednesday after cleanup was completed.The CHP is continuing its investigation, including reviewing dashcam and surveillance footage, and conducting toxicology tests on the suspected driver.Authorities have not released the names of the deceased, pending notification of their families.
