On the eve of Republic Day, the Government of India announced the 2026 Padma Awards, honoring individuals whose contributions have profoundly shaped the nation. This year, a select group of cinema actors was recognised for their enduring impact across languages and regions.
The highest cinematic honour, the Padma Vibhushan, was posthumously awarded to Dharmendra, the iconic Hindi film star whose evolution from romantic lead to beloved legend mirrors the transformation of Indian mainstream cinema.
Mammootty received the Padma Bhushan for his bold choices and nuanced performances in Malayalam films and beyond, earning widespread critical acclaim and fan loyalty.
Several prominent actors were bestowed the Padma Shri: R. Madhavan for his heartfelt roles in Tamil and Hindi cinema; Murali Mohan for his poised presence in Telugu films; Rajendra Prasad for his effortless comedy and memorable characters in Telugu cinema; Prosenjit Chatterjee for his reinventions in Bengali cinema; and the late Satish Shah for his indelible supporting roles in movies and TV.
These honorees embody Indian cinema’s power to evoke laughter, emotion, and collective nostalgia.
