Small-budget film Vanaveera starring Avinash Thiruveedhula and Simran Chaudhary in the lead roles has hit the big screens today. Let’s see how the film is.
Story:
Raghu (Avinash Thiruveedhula) is a good-for-nothing guy. Indhu (Simran Chaudhary) is his cousin, and the two deeply love each other. Raghu’s father (Shivaji Raja) keeps telling him to pursue a job, but Raghu never takes him seriously. Deva (Shree Nandu), a member of the dominant caste in Raghu’s town, is chosen as the MLA candidate by the Nava Nirmana Party. Problems arise when Deva’s followers use Raghu’s bike for a rally but fail to return it.
Plus Points:
A handful of comedy scenes in the film evoke decent laughs. While they are not extraordinary, a couple of moments in each half leave an impact and make the movie somewhat tolerable.
The parody episode featuring Sathya towards the end clicks well, with the actor imitating scenes from popular hit films like Dookudu, Temper, Singham, and Vikram. Shree Nandu is good as the antagonist, playing a wicked politician. Avinash Thiruveedhula and Simran Chaudhary are decent in their respective roles.
Minus Points:
The main problem with VanaVeera is that it tries to be too many things but ends up being nothing. The film attempts to tick all the boxes of a commercial entertainer, but the output isn’t satisfactory.
VanaVeera touches upon the divine aspect, but it looks completely forced and out of place, as there is no justification or link to the main story. It feels like a deliberate attempt to milk the divine elements, which have gained huge popularity of late, but with no real substance in the story, the final output is disappointing. At one point, the movie turns into a political drama highlighting caste discrimination and oppression, but the narrative is neither engaging nor convincing.
The drama is poorly developed, and hence, the emotional segments don’t land as intended. The death of a pivotal character can be seen from a mile away, and when that moment finally arrives, it fails to evoke any emotion. When a character isn’t properly established, it becomes difficult to connect with the serious moments. The film also turns preachy and boring in several portions.
Technical Aspects:
Vivek Sagar’s background score is effective during the action sequences. Sujatha Siddharth’s cinematography is fine, and so are the production values. However, the editing is sloppy, as the movie feels lengthy despite its short runtime.
The story and screenplay by Vishwajit aren’t effective, and the same goes for the direction. The caste discrimination theme has been explored multiple times in Telugu cinema, and there is nothing special in VanaVeera. By the end, the film becomes slightly self-aware, and one wishes the narrative had placed more emphasis on this aspect.
Verdict:
On the whole, VanaVeera is a mediocre outing that tries to be too many things but doesn’t succeed in its attempt. Except for a few comedy scenes, the film leaves little impact and becomes boring in several portions. The lead pair and Shree Nandu are fine in their roles, but the screenplay and direction leave much to be desired.
