Former India cricket team captain Rohit Sharma backed Nitish Kumar Reddy to be a future all-format great ahead of his ODI debut. The Andhra Pradesh all-rounder was handed his maiden ODI cap by the Hitman ahead of the IND vs AUS 1st ODI in Perth on Sunday. Filling in the shoes of an injured Hardik Pandya, Nitish impressed with the bat as his cameo helped India reach a face-saving 136-run total in the rain-hit tie.
High praise for Nitish Reddy from Rohit Sharma
In a video uploaded by the BCCI on social media platforms, Rohit is seen giving a speech to Nitish as he hands the latter his maiden ODI cap. The ex-Indian skipper said that he was 110% sure that the all-rounder would not only go a long way in the Indian team with his attitude but was also destined to be an all-format great. Sharma further said that the entire team would always be around him to support him and rally around him when needed.
“You had a great start to your career. And it is only because of how you want to play the game and your attitude. I’m 110% sure that with that attitude, you are going to go a long way in this Indian team. You are going to be an all-format great, which I believe thoroughly because like you said in your speech yesterday, ‘you want to be everywhere’. And that is where we all want you to be,” Rohit Sharma said while handing Nitish Reddy his debut ODI cap.
It was at the same venue that Nitish had received his maiden Test cap as well back in November 2024 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He was handed the cap by former Test skipper Virat Kohli who heaped praise on the all-rounder. Nitish fared pretty well in his maiden Test series, including scoring a brilliant hundred at the MCG.
