New Delhi: As the nation mourned the passing of Bollywood superstar Dharmendra, Indian cricket stalwarts Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar paid tribute, calling him a “legend” and an “icon” of Indian cinema whose work left an enduring impact on generations of movie fans.

Dharmendra passed away in Mumbai at the age of 89

Dharam Singh Deol, popularly known as Dharmendra, had been battling health issues for some time. He was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai and discharged on November 12. After showing signs of improvement, his family chose to continue his treatment at home. He passed away in Mumbai on Monday at the age of 89.

“Today, we have lost a legend of Indian cinema who captivated hearts with his charm and his talent. A true icon who inspired everyone who watched him. May the family find strength in this tough time. My sincere condolences to the whole family,” Kohli wrote on X.

Dharmendra had an illustrious career spanning 65 years

The actor, who would have celebrated his 90th birthday on December 8, had an illustrious career spanning 65 years, featuring in more than 300 films, including iconic titles like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Satyakam, Anupama, and Seeta Aur Geeta. Apart from acting, he also produced films and briefly served as a Member of Parliament. In 2012, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.

“I, like many others, took an instant liking to Dharmendra ji, the actor, who entertained us with his versatility. That on-screen bond became stronger off-screen when I met him. His energy was incredibly infectious, and he would always tell me, “Tumko dekhkar ek kilo khoon badh jaata hai mera.” He had an effortless warmth, making everyone around him feel valued and special. It was impossible not to be a fan of the person he was. Today, my heart feels heavy with his passing. Aisa lagta hai jaise mera 10 kilo khoon kam ho gaya hai. Will miss you,” Tendulkar posted on X.

Apart from his acting career, Dharmendra ventured into politics, winning the Lok Sabha seat from Bikaner as a BJP candidate in 2004.
