US President Donald Trump has called on Israel to immediately stop its bombing campaign in Gaza to allow hostages held by Hamas to be released safely, following a partial agreement by the militant group to his 20-point peace plan. Writing on social media platform Truth Social, Trump said Hamas was “ready for a lasting PEACE” after the group issued a statement agreeing to proceed with the hostage exchange portion of his plan, which he unveiled alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House earlier this week. “Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly! Right now, it’s far too dangerous to do that,” Trump wrote. He added that discussions “on details to be worked out” were already in progress and emphasised that “this is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East.” Hamas said it would release all Israeli prisoners, both living and dead, according to the exchange plan proposed by President Trump, only if “the field conditions for the exchange are met.”Also Read: Big Embarrassment For Trump! However, Hamas did not address the proposal’s provision calling for the permanent disarmament of its militant wing. Senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk told Al Jazeera that the group would not disarm while the Israeli occupation continued but said it could transfer its weapons to a future Palestinian administrative body. Trump’s statement followed an earlier ultimatum, posted hours before, giving Hamas until Sunday evening to accept the deal. He warned that “all HELL, like no one has ever seen before, will break out against Hamas” if an accord was not reached, while asserting there would be “PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.” In his post, Trump also threatened Hamas members, claiming they were “surrounded and MILITARILY TRAPPED” and would be killed if he gave the order. He urged Palestinian civilians in Gaza City to move “for safer parts of Gaza” due to potential danger. Qatar, which has mediated between Israel and Hamas in the past, welcomed the announcement. Majed Al Ansari, a Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson, said Doha “welcomes the announcement by the Hamas movement of its agreement to the proposal … to end the war in Gaza [and] its readiness to release all hostages, within the framework of the exchange formula outlined in the proposal.” He added that Qatar agreed with Trump’s call for an immediate ceasefire, saying it would help facilitate the “safe and swift release of hostages” and “stop the bloodshed of our Palestinian brothers in the Gaza Strip.”
