The documentary UNITY – The Man of Social Justice has received the prestigious Best Documentary award at the 2025 Gaddar Film Awards, bringing recognition to filmmaker Vijay Kumar Badugu for his powerful portrayal of the life and legacy of legendary Telangana leader Konda Laxman Bapuji.
The Telangana government recently announced the winners of the Gaddar Film Awards, with UNITY – The Man of Social Justice emerging as the top winner in the documentary category. The film presents a detailed and engaging narrative about Konda Laxman Bapuji, widely respected as one of the key figures in Telangana’s political and social history and often referred to as the “Father of the Telangana People.”
The announcement was made by documentary and short film jury chairman Vijay Kanakamedala at the office of the Telangana State Film Development Corporation in Hyderabad. The jury appreciated the film’s storytelling approach and its ability to present an important historical figure in a way that appeals to both scholars and younger audiences. According to the jury, the documentary successfully brings the legacy of Konda Laxman Bapuji closer to the public through clear narration and well-structured visuals.
Produced by Chirandas Srikanth, the documentary features strong performances by well-known artist Mime Madhu and child actor Master Bhanu, who play key roles in recreating important moments from Bapuji’s life. Their performances add emotional depth to the 30-minute film, helping audiences connect with the struggles and achievements of the veteran freedom fighter.
The jury also highlighted the film’s technical quality, praising its visuals, narration, and editing. The documentary maintains a steady and engaging pace, allowing viewers to understand the historical significance of Konda Laxman Bapuji while also appreciating the cinematic presentation.
Before winning the Telangana Gaddar Film Award, the documentary had already gained recognition on international and national platforms. The film won two awards at the Bharat International Film Festival and also earned the Best Director award at the Dadasaheb Phalke Awards in 2025, further strengthening its reputation in the documentary film circuit.
Speaking about the recognition, director Vijay Kumar Badugu and producer Chirandas Srikanth expressed their gratitude, saying it was a great honor to receive an award named after legendary revolutionary poet and singer Gaddar. They said the recognition not only celebrates the documentary but also honors the life and ideals of Konda Laxman Bapuji, who dedicated his life to social justice and the welfare of people.
The filmmakers also thanked the Dil Raju, chairman of the Telangana Film Development Corporation, along with jury chairman Vijay Kanakamedala and the entire selection committee for supporting films that highlight Telangana’s cultural and historical heritage.
Members of the film’s team, including Mime Madhu and Master Bhanu, also expressed their appreciation to the Telangana government for encouraging documentaries that preserve the state’s history and celebrate the contributions of its iconic leaders.
