Mexican authorities have arrested former footballer Omar Bravo on suspicion of child sexual abuse, local officials said. The Jalisco state prosecutor’s office said investigations suggest Bravo, 45, allegedly abused a teenage girl on multiple occasions in recent months and may have committed similar acts previously. He was taken into custody during an operation in the municipality of Zapopan and is expected to appear in court shortly, the statement added. Bravo gained fame playing as a forward for Chivas de Guadalajara, where he became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. He also represented Mexico at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The Associated Press reported that it was unable to reach a lawyer for Bravo for comment. On Bravo’s Instagram account, fans responded to his most recent post from 8 September, which did not mention the allegations. Some expressed sadness, while others said he was their idol and hoped the claims were untrue. The prosecutor’s office said the investigation would continue.
